[video] Chess News #10: Magnus Magnificant Endgame

During the fourth round of the Aerosvit tournament in Foros Magnus Carlsen played a very interesting endgame against Pavel Eljanov. The two white knights should probably have held the blockade but in the end the wrong one jumped into a5 leaving the other one in too much danger. That gave Carlsen the opportunity to clinch victory which he duly did. Enjoy the video!

Maar dan nu wat vragen. Om 7:35 komt een variant waarin zwart niet zou winnen. In plaats van …Tc2+ leek me …b2 beter, maar misschien heb ik iets overzien.
Na wits ongelukkige P3a5? (echt een hele slechte zet, maar wit wilde niet dat zwart op een gegeven moment beide paarden kon ruilen tegen een toren.) was het wel bijna over. Toch denk ik dat wit met Pd6 om 10:38 nog wel kansen had om wat leuks te doen met dat paard.
Het eindspel met P+ pi tegen T+ pi leek me nog wel remiseachtig. Met Kg5 ipv Kg3 om 12:50 en Pf5 ipv g5? om 12:58 had wit waarschijnlijk beter kunnen verdedigen. Het kost in ieder geval minder velden. Misschien niet genoeg voor een schamel halfje, maar het kost Carlsen in ieder geval nog wat zweet. Ach ja, Pavel E is altijd wel een lopend punt voor Carlsen.
